Brass Lessons

I play the trombone and euphonium the most, therefore, I teach them the most, to students of all ages and experience levels.  That includes the baritone horn and the smaller, higher-pitched alto trombone.  As the euphonium is in fact in the tuba family, I also teach the tuba from the elementary through the college levels.

Many principles of brass playing are similar across the board and so I also teach the trumpet, to new players up through approximately their second year of study.

As the brasses go, the horn (French horn) is the most different animal.  So although I presently have one horn student and have had a few through the years, I usually direct horn students to my colleagues who teach and perform on that instrument.

I teach at several institutions including McCutcheon MusicSinclair Community College, Earlham College, Indiana University East, Spring Valley Academy, and the Miami Valley School.

My home studio in Kettering was built precisely for teaching, practice, rehearsing and recording. There, I have the easiest access to materials we may need in lessons such as sheet music, recordings, play-along tracks, software, breathing tools, other instruments, and more.

Lesson Prices:

8th grade and younger – 30 minute lessons – $25.00

9th grade and older – 1 hour – $40.00

This guide is the norm but any age student can opt for any length lesson.

Group Lessons/Chamber Ensemble Coachings – 1 hour, 2 students = $20.00/student; 3 or more = $10.00/student

  • Payment is expected at each lesson, double at the first lesson, so students are always ahead by at least one payment. This helps enforce the cancellation policy (below).  Naturally, if a lesson is cancelled within the policy then the student will be credited. Advance payments are also accepted.
  • Missed lessons will be refunded if they are cancelled by calling me 24 hours in advance.  Without this notice, refunds will still be given in cases of same-day illnesses, emergencies, and inclement weather; but please call the night before if you think you might miss the next day.  For short notice cancellations, please call. Acceptably cancelled lessons will be credited.  Occasionally, I will also need to reschedule lessons.
  • Please have a 3-ring binder and paper for lessons, so I can add material and write assignments.
  • You can record your lessons on a cell phone, tablet, or other device, or I can record and place them on a blank CD or flash drive that you bring.
  • Students will need to buy books and solos after the first few months, usually between $10 and $20 once a year. In time they will need a metronome (app is fine), tuner (app is fine), cleaning equipment, and a recording device (app is fine).  At home practicing with a mirror and near a computer is occasionally useful.
  • We can record your lessons and place them on a blank CD or flash drive that you bring.
  • Please avoid wearing perfumes and colognes when in my home as they sometimes cause migraine headaches for my wife.
  • STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PRACTICE, and parental awareness/support of this helps immensely. Eventually, interested students stop watching the clock and do the work demanded by the music. In my experience, that work usually takes the following minimum amounts of time:
6th-7th Grade 20-30 minutes 4-5 days/week
8th-9th Grade 30-40 minutes 4-5 days/week
10th-12th Grade 1-2 hours 4-5 days/week
10th-12th Grade with music-career aspirations 2 or more hours 6-7 days/week
College Music Education Major 2 or more hours 7 days/week
College Performance Major 3 or more hours 7 days

My students have received highest marks at the Ohio, Indiana, & Massachusetts Music Educator’s Solo Competitions; been accepted to the Interlochen Arts Academy Summer Program, Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Springfield Youth Symphony, Dayton Metro Band, HBCU National Band Director’s Consortium & Ohio’s 13th District Honor Band; won the Middletown Symphony Youth Solo Competition (brass division) & placed 1st & 2nd in the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer’s Competition (brass); received a full scholarship to the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute; & been accepted as music majors to New England Conservatory, Wright State University, The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Morehead State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Ohio State, University of Dayton, Heidelberg College, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan University, Eastern Kentucky University, & Indiana/Purdue University Fort Wayne, many with scholarships. Some graduates are now teaching and some are performing in orchestras, bands, and Jazz bands, and military ensembles.
